Crittall Glazing Installation in Devon, UK

Our project focused on a comprehensive overhaul of the glazing in a residential property in the picturesque county of Devon, UK. The property had undergone a similar update ten years prior; however, the replica windows installed at that time failed to capture the authentic look and feel of traditional Crittall glazing and presented numerous issues over the years. Our objective was to rectify these problems by replacing the inadequate replicas with high-quality, authentic Crittall glazing, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the windows and doors throughout the property. 

Challenges

  • Authenticity: Achieving the authentic Crittall look, which the previous installation could have accomplished, posed a significant challenge. This required meticulous attention to detail in the design and manufacturing of the new glazing units to ensure they matched the traditional style.
  • Structural Integrity: The property featured timber subframes that needed to be preserved and integrated with the new installation without compromising the structural integrity of the building.
  • Volume and Scale: The project entailed the replacement of 111 individual windows and three sets of double doors, and one arched head Crittall window a substantial volume that demanded precise planning and coordination.
  • Time Constraints: Completing the installation within a tight three-week timeframe required efficient project management and coordination with various stakeholders.

Project Management

The project was meticulously planned and executed to manage the volume of work within the allotted time. This involved detailed scheduling, mobilising an experienced installation team, and establishing a clear communication channel between the project managers, the installation team, and the property owners.

Timber Subframe Integration

Special care was taken to integrate the new glazing with the existing timber subframes. This involved detailed assessments and adjustments to ensure the new units could be installed without compromising the frames’ integrity or the property’s aesthetic continuity.

Installation Process

The installation was carried out in phases to minimise disruption to the property owners. Teams were allocated specific areas to work on, moving systematically through the property to replace the windows and doors. Each set of double doors and individual windows was carefully installed, ensuring a perfect fit and finish that matched the Crittall style’s distinctive characteristics.

Outcome

The project was completed within the 3-week, transforming the property’s aesthetic and functional aspects. The new glazing addressed the authenticity issues presented by the previous replicas and enhanced the property’s overall appeal. The integration with the timber subframes was seamlessly achieved, preserving the property’s character while providing the modern benefits of Crittall glazing, such as improved thermal efficiency and security.
